The February 2nd tradition is all about enjoying delicious crepes.
The term Candlemas originated from the word candle. The date of Candlemas is established by the date set for the Nativity of Jesus; it occurs 40 days after Christmas. In the Roman era it was a celebration in honor of the god Pan. Then in 472 the pope Gélase 1st decided to Christianize the celebration. It would become a celebratory presentation to Jesus at the temple. Processions of people with Christmas candles are taking place, and the traditional crepes are shared. This custom is almost always forgotten but still mostly respected in France. The crepes must be eaten only after eight p.m and if the cook can flip a crepe while holding a gold coin in the other hand the family is assured of prosperity throughout the coming year.
Here is the recipe for yummy Bingo Crepes:
Ingredients (around 30 crepes)
500 gr of flour
6 eggs
1 pinch of salt
40 gr of powdered sugar
40 gr of butter
1 liter of milk
Directions:
In a large bowl, combine the flour, the salt, the sugar and make a hole in the center.
Add in the milk and the eggs one by one until well blended. Melt butter and stir in to milk. Add everything back into flour. Whip the mixture vigorously in order to make it homogeneous and keep stirring until there's no lumps. Then leave it aside for an hour and whip it again just before cooking. To cook them you will need a non-stick pan.
And do not forget to flip a crepe while holding a gold coin in the other hand, then go and try your luck in a bingo game. Bon appétit!
