Superstitions - Chapter 2 - The Mirror

Today in the second chapter of our series on Superstitions; we are recalling an ancient prohibition or warning that comes from a parallel dimension on the other side of the mirror.

Can you imagine what would it be to live 7 years without winning a Bingo? That no matter how many cards you buy, and how much you desire that big jackpot your luck just seems to be broken into pieces? This metaphor may not be too far from reality. We all know that we must avoid not breaking a mirror or else we will be doomed to have 7 years of bad luck. But do you know why? Do you know where this warning comes from?

The Catoptromancy, which is the art of divination with mirrors is an ancient custom which had its origins in ancient Persia and was very popular during the middle Ages however it was always persecuted by the Church. In fact in 1316, Pope John XXII threatened to excommunicate those who practiced the catoptromancy believing that demons often found refuge in mirrors.

It was believed that this practice opened a window into inter-dimensional worlds reflecting another version of our reality that was closely related to our fate in this dimension. The mirror would have the power to reflect visions from past, present and future. They used to sit the person in front of the mirror to look at himself until he was hypnotized by his own reflection. It was during this trance that all sorts of questions were asked letting the wisdom of the reflection grant the answers.

The reflection represented the vision of our own soul. The act of breaking a mirror meant a direct assault on the soul, which is reflected on damage that one could not escape for at least 7 years. This period of misfortune comes from the belief that the body suffered major physiological changes in cycles of 7 years. After this period, the reflection would be renewed clearing any previous spell.

So now you know, it's better to continue being careful with mirrors, and keep that respect for this mystical world that reflects us. We do not want to affect our good fortune. Better to have luck on our side for life especially on bingo nights!
