Chance favors only those who court her.
Officer Reeves approached Paula and Phoenix in the sternest of manners. He opened his mouth to speak, when a sudden piercing light burst into the dark interrogation room. An indiscriminate woman entered the room, but Paula could tell she was a woman in charge.
"That'll be quite enough officer Reeves, thank you very much," the woman said.
Startled, officer Reeves stammered, "Ma'am, I was just about to enlighten..."
"... Civilians into a highly classified case, correct me if I am mistaken Reeves." The woman stated in a biting manner.
"You're correct," Reeves continued to stammer, seemingly not himself. "I'm sorry."
"Sorry doesn't solve cases Reeves. You've done quite enough here; go have a good evening with your family."
"Yes, I'll do that, right away. Thank you Investigator Drejna." At that, Reeves dashed out of the office, sending apologetic glances to both Paula and Phoenix, both of whom looked startled and confused.
"Hello ladies," Drejna began, "As I'm sure you have gathered, I am Special Investigator Jessika Drejna. You may call me Jessika, or Drejna, though I'd prefer the latter."
"Hello, I'm Paula," Paula said, although she seemed to be now distraught at having lost Reeves right before he divulged perhaps crucial information.
"Phoenix. A pleasure," said Phoenix, extending her hand. Drejna had hands like ice and a hard grip, but her hands were soft.
"Listen my dears, I apologize for that scene in front of Officer Reeves. He tends to get a bit passionate about his work, and that sometimes leads to problems. Anyways, I'm the one who's been assigned to investigate your case on a federal level; it's been given the highest of priorities. I used to work with Dan, the man who I believe you both know."
"Dan... the man... What can you tell us, Officer?" Paula asked tentatively.
"Investigator. And I can't tell you a whole lot, unfortunately. He is a liar. He's a crook, and we want to find him so we can put him away. This is something we're going to need your help with, Paula... Phoenix. He was seen just yesterday near the Pleasant Surprise Bingo Hall. He had been missing before then. And it seems he had an accomplice, a partner - a man we didn't recognize..."
Patrick! Phoenix thought to herself, but bit her tongue, listening intently.
"...but we know he's going to try and make contact with one of you. He was reportedly limping and possibly wounded. You must call me immediately if he attempts to make contact with you, and we will protect the best interests immediately."
"The best interests?" Phoenix didn't like the feeling she got from this woman, not one bit.
"Yes, absolutely. Anything to make sure Dan is safe... Investigator Drejna," Paula eagerly replied. Phoenix could see hope in her poor sister's eyes, and she was worried.
"Thank you very much Paula, Phoenix. I'm sure I'll be seeing you in the near future," Drejna declared, and handing them both her business card, she exited as abruptly as she had come.
Nothing but trouble could come of this, thought Phoenix. The woman had told them nothing.
