The Spy Who Called Bingo: Part 2
It had all happened so fast - the fateful night that Patrick and Dan had been shot and kidnapped in front of her very eyes. Paula recalled the night vividly; well she should, it had haunted her nightly for every night in the week since it had happened. The gunshots had been a lion's roar; the gun's flashes lightning cracking before her eyes. In all her life Paula had never experienced such a shock. Over and over again Paula ran the memory through her head, but she could never recall the license of the van, her eyes had been too blurred by the tears that had rushed down her face all too easily. Why had she been so weak? She had asked Phoenix, but for once in her life Phoenix had comforted her, no one could bear witness to something like that and remain calm. She was more composed now, sitting in the policeman's office. They had recently apprehended a suspect who may possess leads to tracking down Dan and Patrick. Ruperto was his name, and he was notorious for being a small time dealer in the region. Paula had actually seen him down at the harbour before. The policeman, Reeves, was interrogating the dealer as she waited. Paula was pensive, and she could swear she had aged ten years in the past week. Phoenix was standing silently beside her; she too had changed since the incident. "What do you think he knows?" Paula asked her sister softly. "I think he knows exactly where they are, to be honest. He's an inside man with the same people we think took Patrick." And then, adding a bit too late, "and Dan." Paula loved her sister despite their mottled relationship, and it distressed her to see the worry in her eyes. Phoenix didn't ordinarily worry, not once in her life had Paula seen her this way. She was sad that she was in this state, but there was a small reprieve in seeing her sister care so much. "I don't know anymore Paula," said Phoenix, stating, perhaps a bit brashly, "but I know that we're going to find them." "Well what do you intend to do Phoenix? You're assuming a lot here. Assuming they're alive is assuming a lot!" It came flashing back then, and Paula broke down into gentle sobs. "They'll get them Paula; it's what these men do for a living." Phoenix wished she could believe her own words as easily as she spoke them. She missed Patrick, she vowed to herself if he ever got out of this kidnapping she would kidnap him! The policeman, Reeves, came out from the interrogation room. He looked tired; this was one of the biggest cases the department had on the go. "Listen Phoenix, Paula, this guy had some things to say that were pretty solid evidence. I think you might want to sit down, we might be onto something here."
