The Spy Who Called Bingo: Part 11

A cause is not worth dying for. You only get one life, but you can pick up another five causes on any street corner.

Spy Who Called Bingo"What is going on? They've been out there quite a while," said Paula, glancing outside at Dan and Patrick, looking a bit anxious outside the coffee shop.

"What's your hurry then, Paula? More important matters to attend to?" Phoenix asked her sister with a sly grin. Phoenix was nervous as well, but only because she was the one with something to hide. She looked at Patrick and Dan outside, and it looked like they were arguing. She didn't understand how a phone call could make them argue. Though they'd spent a lot of time together recently, they were still relative strangers, weren't they?

They'd come back in just then, and Phoenix grabbed her coffee to take a sip, but it was too hot and she spilled a little on herself. Dan was in front, and looked he like had a lot on his mind.

"Hey gals. I'm sorry about that, but it was my employers, and it looks like I've got to dash again. I know we have a lot to talk about, but it's going to have to wait. I've hired Patrick as my associate, and we're booked solid through until next week. We'll perhaps do dinner then? I know things have been a bit weird but... such is life!"

His nonchalance set Phoenix a bit on edge; something was definitely amiss, although she could not place it. She wasn't in any mood to argue though, considering the betrayal that lay at her lower back in the form of a small microphone.

"Oh, of course. Well... we'll have to catch up soon then. Sorry to hear that Dan." Paula said, and seemed a bit distraught. Phoenix had noticed Paula had been different, but this was open hurt on her face. She also noted Patrick had not said a word to her since they came back in.

"Goodbye Phoenix, Paula, I do sincerely hope we can meet again soon." Patrick said, looking them both squarely in the eyes. He too seemed indifferent, like Dan. They left without another word.

Driving off into the rapidly brightening morning, Patrick's mind was racing with questions, but he could not speak. He thought it might just be a caffeine rush, but it just wasn't right.

"Listen Patrick, we're going to set up a safety point tomorrow, tomorrow is the day the Prime Minister is scheduled to be assassinated. They have inside men, and if we try to tell him his phone is rigged, he'll die. We have to save him through alternative methods. We have to fake his death, we're going to pseudo-assassinate him. Are you okay with that?"

Patrick was speechless. He knew he could never return to the humble life he once so joyously and blissfully led. The problems of before seemed insignificant now. A dream come true, but a bit of a nightmare just the same.

"Yes, that's just fine Dan. We have to protect the country, right?" Patrick said more strongly than he felt.

They drove on.
